Friday Favorite

September 23, 2011

As Maxwell starts to eat more and more “real” food, mealtime becomes more and more of a challenge. Trying to think of new foods that he will eat is hard. Presenting him with new foods that he just throws on the floor is frustrating. Worrying about whether or not he’s getting enough to eat is not fun. I really want him to be exposed to all kinds of food and flavors. I know he’s a kid so chicken nuggets and french fries are inevitable…but maybe I can at least make it organic chicken and sweet potato fries?!

He still eats some baby food but I always mix it with chunkier fruit or cereal/oatmeal. I don’t feel bad about it because at least I know he’s getting fruits and vegetables in him that way! I also always give him some sort of finger food at every meal and try to get him to eat that first before offering the baby food.

Here’s a list of the foods he will eat with no problem…

Cheerios, baby food (Earth’s Best jars and pouches, especially the smoothie packets and Happy Baby pouches), oatmeal and any other kind of baby cereal, bananas, watermelon, strawberries, puffs, yogurt melts, YoBaby yogurt, some of the Gerber stuff (fruit strips, cereal bars, cookies), any kind of cracker, hummus (he looooves hummus on crackers), and avocado (mushed up and usually mixed with a jar of veggies). I probably feed him half of an avocado every day.  He loves it and I love that he’s getting all the good fat.

Here’s a list of foods he will eat most of the time, and throw on the floor some of the time…

Grilled cheese, quesadillas, waffles, french toast sticks, cheese sticks and cubes.

Now that he has more teeth, I’m trying to introduce even more finger foods.  A friend recently turned me on to the Dr. Praeger’s brand of frozen kid foods.  I’ve liked them so much that they are today’s Friday Favorite!  All organic, all healthy and all tasty (for adults too)!  So far we’ve tried the fishies and the spinach littles.  Maxwell liked the fishies but he loved the spinach littles.  Loved them.

He’s going to be strong to the finish!  toot toot!  I had to go to Whole Foods to find them but I think some major grocery stores carry them as well.

Adventures in eating!

Have a great weekend!

Happy Fall!

September 22, 2011

With highs only in the 70’s, Fall is officially here!  That can only mean one thing around here – Pumpkin Bread!

pumpkin bread

Yuuuuuum.

Pumpkin Bread

1 cup oil
2.5 cups sugar
4 eggs
3.5 cups flour

Beat and add:
1 can pumpkin
3/4 cup water

Stir in:
1 t salt
1 t cinnamon
1 t nutmeg
1/2 t cloves
2 t baking soda

Bake in 2 large or 4 small loaf pans at 350 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour.

If Maxwell could say yum he would have said it over and over yesterday!

Happy Fall!

Saturday outing

August 15, 2011

Hope you all had a great weekend.  Ours was fun and HOT.  I’m not going to be sad when summer rolls out and the crisp days of fall move in…even if it does mean football every. single. weekend.

Saturday was spent running some errands.  Maxwell took along his new favorite toy to play with in the car.

Yep, that’s a spatula.  Why do I buy expensive toys again?

We ended up stopping for lunch at Flip Burger where Maxwell and Robert looked cute while waiting for a table…

and showing off their cool tennis shoes.

We finally got seated and Maxwell gave me this face….

But then I gave him a french fry and all was well.  I think this was his very first french fry ever.

I see the beginning of a long, happy – albeit unhealthy – relationship.

See you tomorrow!

Would love to hear from you! 3 Comments

11 months old!

August 1, 2011

Maxwell turned 11 months old on Saturday.  I love the happy, funny, and sweet little boy that he’s turning into.  He talks and babbles all. day. long.  His belly laughs slay me.  He’s crawling everywhere and pulling up on everything.  We’re starting to (try to) teach him the word no when he gets into cords, drawers and other things he shouldn’t.  He’s even walking while holding onto our hands or pushing his toys across the room.  He’s busy busy busy all day long.

Eating is an adventure.  He’s starting to experiment with more and more finger foods – puffs, yogurt, melts, blueberries and other fruit, Cheerios – but still loves the baby food.  I’ve been trying to get him to try new things – meat, other veggies, beans – and it hasn’t gone so well. I just want him to be a great eater and love all kinds of food so we’ll keep offering him different things to taste.  I’m sure he’ll come around eventually!  He’s doing great with his formula bottles now.  He takes a 7 to 8 oz bottle 3 times a day – 7am, 11:30am and 6:15pm.  Bedtime is still 7:00pm and he sleeps until around 6:30am.  We’re still on a 2 nap a day schedule and he does fantastic with them.  His first nap is at 9:00 and his afternoon nap starts sometime between 1:00 and 2:00.  He’ll sleep anywhere from 1.5 to 2 hours for each nap.

A few other things I want to remember:

  • Nanner, his paci monkey, is his very favorite thing in the world and he can’t wait to see him during nap and night time.
  • He babbles constantly – often making Da Da Da sounds which makes Robert very happy! – and also hums a lot.
  • He loves playing with his trucks, opening and closing his laptop, eating the beads on the Zany Zoo and knocking down block towers.
  • Stroller rides are also a favorite and he loves to sit forward in his seat holding on to the bar so he can see as much as possible around town.
  • He loves to fall backward on the bed or the couch…or get one of us to (gently) throw him down on his back.  Giggles everytime guaranteed!

Maxwell just makes every day a happy one.  It’s impossible to be in a bad mood when you see this smiling face every day!

Even when he’s not smiling he still makes me happy!

Maxwell does make many funny faces…

But he also makes the best smiley faces ever!

Something that didn’t make him (or me) smile?  About half a second after this picture…

Maxwell fell forward off the chair and face planted on the rug.  After tears, screams and lots of hugs from Momma, Maxwell recovered and decided that the photo shoot must go on.  He still had to pose with Little Al after all!

Now Little Al, don’t lean forward in this chair because you might fall out and, lemme tell ya, it hurts to fall on your face.

The best thing to do is just sit back, cross your ankles and smile.

And you can make a silly face too…Momma likes that!

It’s never dull around our house, that’s for sure!  He’s a few more pictures to round it all out…

Strawberry Shortcake, Huckleberry Pie

July 19, 2011

We have tons of great fruit in the house right now thanks to the awesome Edible Bouquet that Andee, Steve and Ellis sent me.  I’ve been using it as a good opportunity to try giving Maxwell more and more solid fruits.  While he had some strawberries on the 4th of July, he liked them much better this time around….

I didn’t share the chocolate covered ones with him though.  Those were all mine!  🙂
