While Maxwell has been on a high this week after all of the birthday fun, Spencer has been having a bit of a rough go! It all started with a mild fever on Friday. Not enough to slow him down but just enough to wear him out. Then, at the birthday party on Saturday, he just got overtired, overheated and overstimulated and, unfortunately, spent much of the party doing this…
But, he took a great nap and seemed to be fine that night. The next day on Sunday afternoon, we got to go to a fun party at Jack’s house and the boys had a blast even if they were on clean up duty! 🙂
Don’t worry, they were given pizza in exchange for their hard work. 😉
We did learn that Spencer unfortunately has the same reaction to mosquito bites as I do!
See under his left eye? It just kept swelling and growing. By the time we got home, it looked like this…
Poor buddy. He was acting fine though and slept all night with no issue. On Monday morning, he kept sleeping and sleeping and so I finally went into his room at 8:00am to wake him up only to find him COVERED HEAD TO TOE IN HIVES!
I mean, his eyes were almost swollen shut! It was honestly terrifying. Thank goodness my mom was still in town or I might have lost it. I called the doctor and got him an appointment at noon. In the meantime the nurse called me back and said it was very likely an allergic reaction to something and so we gave him Benadryl. The hives were not bothering him at all so he got to enjoy the morning hanging at home watching Dumbo with GJ and Daddo. By the time I took him up to the doctor, the Benadryl had kicked in and his hives looked much better…but he was also pretty tired!
He rallied and did great at the doctor despite the long wait.
Dr. Walley took one look at him and said it was, in fact, not allergies but viral hives. Yea, I’ve never heard of them either. Apparently it’s just a virus and, similar to Hand, Foot & Mouth, it’s pretty asymptomatic until the hives show up at which point you’re no longer contagious. The fever on Friday was probably a sign of this coming but we’ll never know for sure. Treatment is just a double dose of Zyrtec/Claritin until the hives go away. By Tuesday morning, he woke up looking MUCH better!
Eyes still a little swollen but 90% hive free and feeling good! We even got to go to another playdate at Jack’s house that afternoon where Spencer strutted his stuff! 🙂
He still has 3 spots on his leg that haven’t gone away yet. Dr. Walley said it can take up to 10 days for all the hives to completely disappear. He’s actually been scratching at those a bit so I hope they don’t end up bothering him. Also, since he’s had such a rough week, I’m not going to give him too hard a time about pooping in the pool at swim lessons yesterday! ha! Yep, Spence is ready for a new week indeed!
Happy weekend!
It was alarming when we got him up that morning but thankfully the hives disappeared almost as quickly as they appeared. And you just have to laugh about the pool accident!
Nothing like a fresh start!
Poor little Spencer! He did have a hard time. So glad he’s doing better.
