Manual Labor

May 5, 2014

We had a weekend full of yard work – lots of yard work – and all that manual labor has made me sore and tired!  But, I’m glad we got so much good work done and our yard is starting to look like spring!  Of course, none of it would have been possible without GJ’s help!  I just love how she somehow manages to be in town on a beautiful April/May weekend each year so I can rope her into helping us in the yard!  🙂

First, I got my planters in the backyard all fixed up…no thanks to my “helper”.

He was really good at throwing out the dirt I put into the pot!

But, how can you be mad when he’s this cute?!

Along with my second helper, we planted sweet basil, purple basil, rosemary, 3 kinds of tomatoes (sweet cherry, patio and some random variety from the grocery store) and a blueberry plant!

Hooray for mini gardens!

and for my stroooong helpers!

This is my first year trying a blueberry plant so we’ll see.  Spencer was bound and determined to kill it before it even had a chance…

Hopefully he’ll learn to leave it alone!…and learn to stop throwing dirt all over himself!  🙂

But, he did learn this weekend to leave his hat on for a bit so that’s good!

I also got smart this year and just got a pre-mixed planter basket to put in my square planters…

flowers

Easy peasy!

My mom bleached our front steps and made me realize that I didn’t know just how dirty they were!  So much better now!

steps

My mom and I also sprayed Round Up in all the beds – we used a lot Round Up to kill a lot of weeds!  Robert trimmed all the boxwoods and got them looking good.  We also decided we needed to pull up a few of the spirea bushes we had in front because they weren’t going to come back.  I took my helpers to Home Depot (which Maxwell has declared his favorite store – I’m sure the orange everything doesn’t hurt!) and picked out something to replace them with.  My helpers decided on these Jasmine plants…

garden

Good choice.  Getting the 3 dead spirea out of the ground was easy – getting out the 2 alive ones that I also needed to move was a different story!  I was digging hard with that shovel and wielding that ax – thank goodness I work out!  With a little sweat, we got the old plants out and the new plants in and I think they’re going to do great in that spot.

garden

On Sunday I started planting our new annuals.  Maxwell spotted these orange zinnias and these little orange pine cone looking flowers called celosia and that was that.  We had to have those for the yard.  I got the ones by the street planted as well as some in front of our crape myrtle.

yard

He keeps calling them “my orange flowers”.  Pretty cute.  I’ll tackle the ones by the front steps next.

It was frankly an exhausting weekend but a good exhausting.  Never, ever did I think I would enjoy yard work but the satisfaction you get from a job well done is great!  Next weekend?  Mulch!  Isn’t home ownership fun?!  🙂

For my records – I used 8 flats of 8 for the front bed and in front of the crape myrtle. Pansies in the fall, this year a mixture of zinnias and celosia in the front. I planted begonias by the front steps and used 5 flats of 10 for the two beds. I did not plant anything by the back of the parking pad. We got 5.5 yards of mulch delivered from Cahaba Heights Hardware.

It’s beginning to look

December 3, 2013

a lot like Christmas!  As soon as we got back from Montgomery, we started pulling out the Christmas decorations!  First up?  The new little tree in Maxwell’s room!

maxwell's tree

He’s loved it and he’s been sleeping with it all lit up every night!

Saturday morning we headed out to get our real tree…

We picked the best 6 footer out there!

We got home and got it in the house (even though Spencer would have been fine just getting to play with the stand all day!)

and then I got it all decorated during the AL/Auburn game with Maxwell’s “help”. Yea, I was glad to have a project to distract me a bit during the game.  That was QUITE a showdown.  Wish it had turned out differently but, you can’t win em all I guess.  Roll Tide!

I think it’s the best tree yet, don’t you?

I changed a few of our decorations up a bit this year like this mantle…

and a couple of other things mainly just to keep the decorations out of the way of grabby little hands!

Saturday night we even busted out the new Christmas pi’s!

I love having the decorations up and all the Christmas cheer in the house!

We still love fall!

November 15, 2013

What’s that? You liked the leaf pictures so much yesterday that you want to see more today? You’re in luck!  🙂

After all the leaves were blown it was time for a little break…

but then the job had to be finished and all the leaves had to be bagged.

Clearly not as much fun as blowing the leaves!

Maxwell was nice and let Robert borrow his “fireman mask” to try and keep those allergens away!

ha!  All in a day’s work for these two guys…

pumpkins and mums

September 30, 2013

Happy Monday!  Hope you all had a great weekend.  Ours was good – just still trying to get rid of all the sickness.  This Hand, Foot and Mouth disease is for the birds!  Anyway…on to happier things.

One of the blogs I read had some pretty pictures of porches all done up for fall and she said “Mums and pumpkins on porches – these are the things that “do it” for you after thirty”  Ha!  So true…at least for me!  We hit up the nursery Saturday morning to pick our pumpkins…

pumpkins

Maxwell helped me pick out a Momma, Dad, Maxwell and Spencey pumpkin!  He then wanted to photograph them all on the porch!

pumpkins

As you can see in the picture, we also got two teeny tiny pumpkins – one for Maxwell’s room and one for Spencer’s room.  Maxwell couldn’t wait to show ya-ya his pumpkin when he got up from his nap!

I just love Fall and all that comes with it!  And I love these pumpkins with my little pumpkin!

See you tomorrow!

Playdate!

April 24, 2013

Last Friday we had a little playdate over here.  It was a beautiful, spring afternoon and it just seemed like a good day to blow up the bounce house and invite a few friends over!  Maxwell had a blast – and only got upset about people playing with his trucks once!  🙂

play date

The best part?  His BFF from school, “Will-wam”, got to come!  He was SO excited when William got here.  Two blonde peas in a pod!

Fun day!
