swim meet

July 9, 2020

When you join swim team and have only been to two practices, what do you do next? A swim meet of course! The kids went to practice on Friday and Monday and then there was a swim meet on Tuesday so we jumped right in! I truly could not have been more proud of each of them. They all swam so hard and did something that could have been really scary and intimidating because it’s new. So brave!

First time in a swim cap!

Happy to be with friends!

Because of corona, each swim team is doing the races at their own pool and then comparing the times digitally. It makes things much less chaotic and makes it all move pretty quickly!

Maxwell’s age division went first and he was even a heat winner in one of his events! He has to go two lengths of the pool.

swim meet

He swam the freestyle, butterfly, and breaststroke as well as a relay. He got a time in the freestyle and butterfly (meaning he didn’t disqualify) so that means he earned a star for getting his two fastest times in two strokes in one meet. Go Maxwell!!

Spencer and Samantha each swim one length of the pool for their races. Spencer did just as good as his brother! He did the freestyle, butterfly, and backstroke as well as a relay. He got a time in the freestyle and backstroke so also earned a star! He was a heat winner ribbon for his relay. Go Spencer!!

Samantha did the freestyle and the breaststroke. She got a time in the freestyle and I was so proud of this little fish for swimming so hard! Go Samantha!!

Swim team

July 8, 2020

When joining the club, the kids got the chance to join swim team! None of them have done any kind of swim team before but were all up for the experience! Practice is 5 mornings a week so it’s pretty intense. In non-corona times they actually do it twice a day! We went to our first practice last Friday and they all jumped right in and did great. I was especially proud of Maxwell. He’s in the white group because of his age but you’re really supposed to have a good grasp of all the strokes before joining that level. Well, he had one swim instructor down in Naples that taught him the strokes last summer and that’s it! But, he did great and the coach said he was totally fine to stay at that level. Woohoo! Maxwell’s also excited because some of his best friends do swim team too so he loves getting to see them so much.

After the first practice I asked him how it was and he said, “Good but really hard!” His age group swims 50s for their races (two lengths of the pool) so it’s a lot of endurance work. He said the warm up was 6 laps!!

Spencer and Samantha have plenty to learn but are right on track with the others their age. Look at that cute little head swimming the length of the pool!

We learned that swim team practice on Friday is the best because you get popsicles!

They’re all going to be freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, and backstroke experts before the summer is over!

We also got our official swim team jerseys so we can start earning stars and patches at meets!

Independence Day

July 6, 2020

We had a great and low-key 4th of July. This is the first 4th in 8 years that we’ve been in Birmingham! The kids and I spent most of the day at the pool.

Why, yes, they are dressed in red, white and blue! Thanks for noticing! Β πŸ™‚

That night we made a good summer vegetable dinner, watched Hamilton (most of it anyway), and caught a big fireworks show from our window! A great way to spend the day!
