October they volunteered at the Camp Smile A Mile Halloween carnival…

and went on a campout in Pensacola to see the Blue Angels! Cool!

Even cooler was when they got kicked out of their campsite because they had too many tents and they had to go spend the night at Oliver’s beach house. Roughing it!

Last month we had a “Scout Mom” night and invited lots of 5th grade moms to come learn about Scouts. Hopeful to get a good group to Troop 63 next year!

Adventure

September 26, 2023

While I was home watching Spencer show off at football and Samantha show off at tumbling, Robert and Maxwell were rafting down the Chattahoochee! Robert very nicely agreed to go on the Scout campout with this crew (plus a few others not pictured)…

scouts

They said the rafting was fun but too short. Next time they should do the more adventorous route.

They then camped out with only a few shenanigans from the boys.

The real adventure came on the drive home. Robert was about 2 hours from Birmingham driving GJ’s Escalade – the Escalade that got a new battery and alternator just about a month ago – and the power steering went out, then the AC failed, then all the electronics went black. Not good at all. Robert pulled over and they managed to squeeze all of the boys into the cars of the other two dads on the trip. Robert then got to sit on the side of the road for two hours waiting for the wrecker to get there from Birmingham. He was very glad to see Courtney pull up in his pink wrecker!!

wrecker

Robert then got to make a new friend in Courtney on their two hour drive back to Birmingham. ha! I met him at the Cadillac dealership where we dumped the car for them to deal with. Always an adventure!! I’m so thankful for Robert’s good nature and calm demeanor – both on the campout and on the trip home! We’re so lucky to have him.

Boy Scout camp

July 10, 2023

Maxwell got home from Falling Creek on a Friday and packed back up to leave for Boy Scout camp on Sunday morning! He had a good partner though…

scout camp

Yep, Robert went to Boy Scout camp for the whole week too! He’s a good dad.

Some pics of the accommodations…

From the stories I heard, it sounds like it was a great week – nothing luxurious about it and the bathroom was…lacking – but a great week nonetheless! Maxwell earned 7 merit badges – Shotgun Shooting, Environmental Science, Emergency Preparedness, Search & Rescue, Reptile & Amphibian Study (still to be fully completed!), Animal Science (oh, the stories from this one!), and Wilderness Survival. A very full and productive week! Robert completed the adult IOLS training (Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills).

Sounded like everyone had fun shooting shotguns!

Animal science! I think Maxwell learned how about shearing a sheep…and about castrating a “kife”! Also, “sheep are shtupid”!

For Wilderness Survival, Maxwell slept out in the woods with nothing but what was in his hands. Better him than me!

Maxwell cooked jambalaya for the troop one night! Go chef Maxwell!

Scouts

May 18, 2023

Scouts has wrapped up for the spring and Maxwell promoted up to Second Class and has earned 12 merit badges so far!

As part of the Family Life badge he did a complete cleanup of the playroom and donated a ton of old toys. Very helpful!!

scouts

He also learned about CPR in the First Aid badge…

scouts

and is becoming quite the cook on campouts! I think he’s getting famous for his fettuccini alfredo (His secret? lots of butter!)

He was recognized at the Court of Honor last week for his accomplishments.
