Yard Goats

June 17, 2024

That’s a wrap on baseball for Spencer! What a fun season. As I mentioned earlier, he joined the AA team this year and it was a great move. He got to play a LOT of baseball and these guys put in the work and it really paid off. Spencer proved his spot on this team. He’s been first batter all season and almost always got on base. He did his job!! He also played catcher all season and made fantastic plays. He didn’t get to pitch nearly as much as he wanted but, when given the opportunity in the final tournament, he took full advantage of it and shut the game down striking out a batter and throwing a runner out at home. I’m so so proud of how much hard work he put into this season – it was long and hot and he rarely complained. His positive attitude is the thing I will always admire most about him. He takes it all in stride, doesn’t let the losses get him down for long, and is always ready to step into whatever position is needed. He’s the best.

I already shared the pics of the tournament in Mississippi where they took home first place! Lots of pics from the rest of the season to share too…starting with the Buffalo Wild Wings tourney in Fultondale where they came in runners up!

Next up was the long, hot tournament in Hanceville in Cullman County. Talk about some small town dirt fields!

No ring at this tourney – they lost in the semi-final game where Spencer was up to bat with 2 outs and struck out not swinging. But, he learned a lot and honestly, it had been such a long day that I don’t think anyone was sad about going home!

We then played in the Mother’s Day tournament in Calera – complete with pink socks for the boys and new hats for the moms!

We were becoming experts at managing the long hot days sitting in a ball field under tents drinking “goat juice” and eating chicken fingers from the concession stand!

We had some good spectators at that tourney too!

Goats came in Runners Up that day! The hardest fought game was the semi-final and we were really proud to walk away on top of that one! I’m not sure anyone minded the 2nd place bling for this tourney.

We then played in a tournament in Vestavia and this is the only picture I have from that one…ha!

On top of all of these, we had our regular season OTM games too…more baseball tomorrow!

More Mother’s Day

May 16, 2024

The kids and Robert were very nice to me on Mother’s Day! They all “happily” posed for pictures…

Yard Goats

May 2, 2024

Spencer is on a new AA baseball team this season and he’s really enjoying it. He likes all of the boys and is getting to play lots and lots of baseball! He’s been first batter all season and has mainly played center field and catcher. He’s also pitched a few times. I’m hoping he gets to pitch even more because he can put it over the plate!

Two weekends ago when I went to Destin with Maxwell for baseball, Robert went to Mississippi with Spencer for a tournament! I think everyone had a really good time and the Goats played awesome! Pretty sure the highlight was the cool hotel pool with a lazy river!

They even managed to locate a Dick’s so Spencer could get a new belt since his current one was at home in his closet! Oops!

Spencer got nailed in the arm with a pitch but he’s tough.

Spartan Baseball Club

April 29, 2024

Maxwell played 7th grade baseball this year which is part of Spartan Baseball Club. The school doesn’t have a 7th grade team so it’s “club” baseball and not technically associated with the school but all practices and games are the high school. The coaches are independent and not employed by the school. They divide the players up into an all 8th grade team, an all 7th grade team, and then a team of 7th and 8th mixed. The rosters varied some game to game but Maxwell played the majority of time on the mixed “Black” team. Beginning of the season photos…

The experience was overall positive but also pretty frustrating. There were several games he didn’t see the field, the changes in rosters didn’t make sense from week to week, and there was just a feeling of unknown throughout the whole season. 7th grade is tough – some of the boys look like fully grown men and some look like kids – and that plays into sports a lot. One thing I know, I’m incredibly proud of Maxwell and how he handled himself all season. When he was riding the bench, he made himself useful by doing gamechanger and always running out to help warm up the outfield. He was always ready to get into game when there was an opportunity. Over the season he played left field, second base and even third. He also pitched a few times and did fantastic.

The most exciting point in the season came in the end of season tournament when the Black team had to play the Green team – which was basically the B team versus the 7th grade A team. It was an awesome game and the B team won it! What a night!! Maxwell likes baseball and he’s a good player. I hope he continues with it because he’s got the skills and the potential to be a great player. I sure to love to watch him play. I’ll always bet on Maxwell!!

Go Spartans!
