Take Me Out…

May 6, 2014

to the ballgame!

ballgame

Robert took Maxwell to his first baseball game on Sunday.

Birmingham Barons v. the Mobile BayBears with great seats!

Maxwell had fun even if he decided he didn’t really like to eat Cracker Jacks.  The bag of M&Ms he got were more his style!

ballgame

It was a 3:00 game which meant he skipped his nap.  After a morning playing outside and an hour at the ballpark, he looked like this on the way home…

When did he get so big?  I see many more ballgames in the future for these two!

Doctor report

April 28, 2014

I took Spencer to see Dr. Walley on Friday for his 18 month old checkup and all looks good!  BIG and good!  🙂  As Dr. Walley said, Spencer’s the height of a nice sized 2 year old!  😉  He’s 34 inches (98th%!!) and 27.5 lbs (95th%). His head is 19.25 inches (95th%). That means he’s grown 2 whole inches in only 3 months and gained 2.5 lbs. My sweet, big boy.  For comparison, here’s Maxwell’s 18 months stats: 33 inches tall (75th to 90th %) and 24 lbs, 13 oz. (50th %). Needless to say, little brother may not be the littlest one forever!  🙂

18 month checkup

He’s got a nasty cough again with a little bit of wheezing so we’re going to try putting him on Singulair for a while to see if that will help open up his airways and let him breathe a little better.  No way to tell if he’ll end up with asthma or not but Dr. Walley seems to think that if we can control it with Singulair now, we should be ok. He had to get 3 shots which is the only reason he got to have puppy with him at the doctor!

18 month checkup

Dr. Walley isn’t concerned yet with his (total) lack of words. I think I mentioned earlier that we have started the Early Intervention through the state to get speech therapy. Here’s the quick version: At 15 months, Dr. Walley mentioned that if he wasn’t talking by 18 months, perhaps we should look into Early Intervention. With no words at 17 months I decided to go on and move forward. I called the state to set up an evaluation which was done at the AL Department of Rehabilitation which is about as nice and welcoming as it sounds…as in not at all.  We had a 30 minute “evaluation” done by 3 ladies, one of which was a therapist sitting on the floor with a bunch of outdated toys, all trying to get Spencer to do things he could do, but didn’t want to. He just wanted to get out of that room. Period. But, we made it through and I burst into tears afterward. Not surprisingly, he qualified for Early Intervention because he has a greater than 25% language delay.  They then sent his case to UCP and we got assigned to a totally lovely, really sweet therapist named Carrie who will come once a month until it’s no longer needed.  Our first session was last week and, honestly, it was kind of a big nothing. She basically just gave us some encouragement and reminded us to be very intentional in all of our interactions with Spencer and use every moment as a teaching moment.  She wants us to start teaching him some signs to use and focus on using short phrases, i.e. “put in” instead of “put the toy in the box.”  She expressed no concern over Spencer catching up eventually and I really don’t have a concern either.  He babbles ALL THE TIME and is a very vocal baby. It just doesn’t come in the form of real words yet.  Well, not real words to us but I’m positive that the sounds he’s using are very real and attached to specific things in his head.  All that to say, he’s getting the help he needs now because I pushed it forward and I’m glad about that.

Also, I’m going to record his first real word as Nana. He has a picture book and several times he has pointed directly at the banana and said “Nana.”  So, nana it is.  Go Spencey go!!

Real words or not, this kid has no problem communicating his wants.  And he may not say “I love you Momma” but he sure does know how to show it!  🙂

Friday 10

March 21, 2014

TGIF!  and TGISpringBreak!  The boys and I are leaving this weekend to go to Naples for the week!  Hooray!!  Unfortunately, Robert has to stay home to work.  We’re sure going to miss him.  I’m going to miss him most on the plane ride as I try to handle both boys by myself!  ack!

A few – or 10 – things around here this week…

1. Spencey is the best. He’s still not talking and he should be so we took some steps this week to get him the help he needs.  I’ll talk more about it later when I have the full story.  However, is he making small improvements every day such as this one…

A firetruck siren!  yes yes yes!  Honestly, that is his first word (ok, sound) said with intention.  Meaning, he’s associating that sound with a thing/person and not just babbling/mimicking sounds!  Hooray!  I’ll take sirens all day from all 3 of my boys!

Susan also really thought he said “bye” and “choo-choo” yesterday.  He’s making progress!

2. Spencer continues to be a stacking fool.  Look at that steady hand-eye coordination!

3. Stacking is fun until big brother’s foot makes it all come tumbling down!

4. Maxwell took a nap in his chair this week.  He was in his room for “quiet time” and didn’t want to sleep so was playing in his chair and I guess the sleep just took over.  I finally went in to wake him up and 4:45 and found him like this. Sweet boy.

5. I love this face…

6. and this laugh…

7. We got a new painting for over our fireplace in the den!  A girl from Arkansas, Amanda Kella, painted it for us and I loooove it!  I spent most of last weekend redoing all of our bookshelves and am loving how light and bright the room feels now!

8. This cracked me up…almost a high five!  🙂

9. We fly into Tampa on Sunday (better to get a direct flight there than to have to change planes with both boys) and my mom and I might have gotten a crazy idea to stop by Disney World for a day on the way to Naples!  and the boys might not know about it yet.  and they might be getting to see Nate and Delaney there.  and we might be really excited!  and, yes, we might be becoming (already are?) those crazy Disney people.  🙂

10. When driving back from school Wednesday, Maxwell told me that in chapel they had told the kids to close their eyes and think about someone they loved.  I asked Maxwell who he thought about and who did he say?  Spencey.  sweet brothers.

bye

Bye! We’re off to Florida!

First Haircut

March 19, 2014

Spencey’s hair was getting pretty long in the back and hanging down into his eyes so I finally gave in and decided it was time for his first haircut!  He’s about the same age Maxwell was when he first got his curls trimmed so it seemed right.  I took him up to Misty at Salon on Hagood and he did great!  I really didn’t think he would sit still in the chair but he did – totally different than Maxwell.  It took Maxwell several times before he would sit in the chair by himself.  Not Spencey!  He just sat there like it was no big deal!  🙂

And with a little help from a graham cracker…

he ended up with a nice little trim!  Just enough to clean it up and get it out of his eyes but not enough to make him look older!  🙂

Firsts are fun!

ps – Other haircut links if you want to look at baby Maxwell – his first cut at Salon on Hagood, his second cut at Salon on Hagood, and his first cut with Misty .  Maxwell has grown up!  🙁  Thank goodness for baby Spencey!  🙂
