Tubes surgery scheduled for first thing this morning.  I’m sure all will go fine and he’ll probably be back home asleep by 9:00.

Monday Monday

January 28, 2014

So…Monday.  Oh, Monday.  I had an appointment to take Spencer to the ENT yesterday to discuss the possibility of getting tubes.  He’s had enough ear infections to warrant a discussion.  Plus, I don’t want to him to have to continue to take so many antibiotics and, also, a part of me is wondering if his ears have anything to do with the fact that he’s not really talking yet.  Maxwell should have been at school while I took Spencer but he started complaining of a sore throat on Sunday afternoon.  By Sunday night he was miserable – and told me so with screaming tears throughout the night at 11:00, 1:00, 3:30 and 5:00.  So, not only did I need to take Spencer to the doc Monday morning, but I had to take Maxwell as well.

I should have known the day was not going to be great when I had them all dressed and ready to walk out the door only to see that Spencer had managed to crawl a hole through the knee of his pants…

1 point for Monday.

(ps – that’s my finger poking through the hole, not a footless leg. I had already taken the pants off when I took the picture.)

After a quick pant change, we went to the ENT and the doctor confirmed that he would recommend tubes for Spencer.  In medical terms, he basically said there is so little downside that it can only be a good thing for him.  No more antibiotics, no more fluid in his ears, etc.  We got the surgery scheduled for Thursday – no time like the present, I guess!

2 points for Monday.

While at the ENT, I also had him look in Maxwell’s throat.  He said it looked red but couldn’t tell yet if the small white patches were going to be a virus or bacterial infection or anything at all.  He recommended waiting another day until going to see the pediatrician to see what was really going to develop on his throat.  Well, I already had the appointment with Dr. Walley and we were already out so I just decided to go on up there anyway.  I’m very glad I did.  Maxwell felt about this good…

Dr. Walley looked in his throat and said that was a pretty clear cut case of strep.  The strep test confirmed it 10 minutes later.  Ugh.  Poor, poor guy.  Cue up the amoxicillin.

3 points for Monday.

I already had an appointment in the calendar to take Spencer up to Dr. Walley on Wednesday of this week to get his 15 month shots that he wasn’t able to get last week at his check-up because he had an ear infection.  While we were up there I asked if they could just go on and do them and they could!  yay!  Well, yay for me…not so yay for this sleeping dude…

He had a very rude awakening about 2 minutes later.

4 points for Monday.

I then learned that my brother has to have back surgery on Thursday for a herniated disk.  Not fun, not fun at all.

5 points for Monday.

So, I ended Monday with strep, shots and 2 surgeries.  Phew. Well played, Monday. Well played.  Is it Friday yet?

Dr Update and More

January 21, 2014

Well, Spencey got two things yesterday – an antibiotic and new shoes!  Both are very welcome!  We took Spencer for his 15 month checkup yesterday and, aside from the congestion and double (!) ear infection, he looks great.  Since Robert and I both had the day off work, we all 4 went together for a little family fun!  Trying to entertain your kids while waiting in a doctor’s office is pretty miserable so when I say fun I mean not fun at all.  But, we were together!

Maxwell also brought his doctor kit and was giving Dad a check-up while waiting for Dr. Walley to come in!  🙂

Spencer is 25 lbs, 11 oz (90th %) and 32 inches tall (95th-98th %)!  I knew he was tall!  Comparison – Maxwell was 23 lbs, 31 inches tall at 15 months and 25 lbs, 33 inches tall at 18 months.  So, at 15 months, Spencer is basically the size Maxwell was at 18 months.

dr

The only thing we need to start working on is Spencer’s vocabulary.  He sort of says Dada right now and that’s his only word.  He definitely needs to have more words by his 18 month appointment so we need to get that paci out of his mouth and get him talking!

After the doctor visit we grabbed lunch and then thought Spencey needed to go get his first pair of new shoes!  He’s been wearing his brother’s hand-me-downs for months (poor second child).  We headed over to Sikes and got him outfitted in some grey New Balances!

new shoes

They make his feet look so big.  They’re a 5.5 wide so he’s got plenty of growing room which is good.

Exciting stuff!  Here’s Maxwell’s first trip to Sikes – he ended up with some grey New Balance as well.  Can’t go wrong with a classic.

Hope you all had a good day off!

Would love to hear from you! 5 Comments

Updates and stuff

November 19, 2013

Update on Spencey – poor kid has Hand, Foot & Mouth (again) and an ear infection.  Double whammy.  He had HFM in early September so I kept him out of school for a month and a half.  I send him back and he’s got it again within a week.  I know he got it at school because the teacher emailed last week that there was another confirmed case in his class.  ugh.  Dr. Walley looked in his mouth and he’s got sores on the back of his throat and it’s all over his bottom. Then he’s also got an ear infection in his right ear.  We got some amoxycillin and he’ll hopefully be feeling better soon.  Now let’s all cross our fingers that Maxwell doesn’t get HFM just in time for Thanksgiving.

This is about how good Spencey feels…

poor buddy.

Update on Maxwell – he’s a great kid.  We had his parent/teacher conference yesterday and Ms. Betsy just had all good things to say about him. She said he could probably run the class for her!  🙂  She did say that, like everyone in the class, he’s still learning how to take turns, especially when it comes to taking turns with his beloved bucket firetruck!  She kind of made a joke that she knows ALL about the firetruck pjs, books, etc. at our house!  She said that, developmentally, Maxwell is right on target and is just a joy to have in class.  yay!

A few other things about Maxwell right now that I want to remember…

From the kid that coined the term “mexaurant” for mexican restaurant, I give you “hanitizer” for hand sanitizer.  Just call him Maxwell Webster’s Brown!

His favorite phrase lately is “you know” and he tacks it on to the end of a lot of sentences.  “I really don’t have a big backhoe loader, you know.”  It’s funny.

He thinks all potatoes are called sweet potatoes.  He says he wants some “sweet potato chips” when he’s talking about normal potato chips and then, this weekend, he was playing with “Mr. Sweet Potato Head”.  It’s just too cute to correct.

The other day he ran into the other room to get something but before he left he turned to me and said, “Momma, I’ll be back lickety-split!”  ha!

As of last night, he’s developed a new trick – climbing in and out of his crib. Oh boy!  I asked him if he just wanted to start sleeping in his big boy bed and he said no. He loves his crib and that’s fine with me! Bedtime has also gotten much more pleasant since we stopped doing “pat-pats” 3 weeks ago. Now it’s just books, rock and sing and then bed.

Orange is still his favorite color and 5 is his favorite number.  He still loves all of his digger trucks but firetrucks are the #1 thing in his life right now.  All things fireman, all day.  We read books about them, we talk about them, we discuss the different types of firetrucks and what they all do.  One might call it an obsession!

Yesterday morning when I told him that Spencer was going to the doctor and not going to school, Maxwell got very concerned and said, “But he will miss me while I’m at school and then he will get sad and cry.”  Oh, sweet boy.  Little do you know about how much fun Spencey has at home when you’re not there!  🙂

I love these boys.

MD and DMD

October 29, 2013

Spencey had his 1 year check up last week and everything looks great!  He’s a big boy – but mainly in height!  He’s tall at 31.5 inches which is in the 95th to 98th %  (Maxwell was 30 inches). He’s 23 lbs, 12 oz  (Maxwell was 21 lbs, 12 oz) and has a head circumference of 18 (Maxwell’s was 19.25). Both weight and head are in the 75th to 95th %.  We got the ok to start going forward with whole milk to I’m going so start giving him cow’s milk at night in a bottle and in a sippy cup during the day (I think).  I’m going to try to keep him going on a pumped bottle in the morning.

Looking back at Maxwell’s 1 year checkup just reminds me what an easy baby Spencer is.  Maxwell was a little challenging during his visit at 1 but Spencey just smiled happily the whole time…and did quite a bit of chewing on Dr. Walley’s stethoscope!  But, no tears except for when he had to get shots and those tears only lasted a minute.  I love this baby.

I’ll tell you one thing though – trying to entertain this wiggle worm in a doctor’s office is no small feat!  I finally pulled out my iphone and videos of Elmo kept him pretty occupied for a while – yay for Sesame Street!

In other terribly exciting news, Maxwell went to the dentist last week!  He did great and let the hygienist clean his teeth and even take x-rays with no complaining!  yay!  Dr. Johnson said his teeth look great but they did mention we should really focus on flossing because his teeth are very tight and close together.  Ummm…flossing a 3 year old’s teeth isn’t exactly easy even with the handled flossers but we’ll give it our best shot!

Yay for healthy babies, healthy teeth, and good doctor reports all around!
