happiness in the mundane

March 3, 2014

We had a gorgeous, spring-like weekend here and I loved every second of it.  We soaked up the sun and warm temps and spent as much time as possible outside.  I even let Maxwell skip his nap on Sunday on the condition that he play outside the entire time…I just couldn’t make him go to bed and miss the beautiful weather.

We didn’t do anything particularly exciting or interesting.  We went to the tot lot – twice.  We played in the sand table.  We made pizza at home.  It was mundane…and wonderful.

I often find myself so focused on what’s next – when are we going to get a bigger house, time to travel, more of this, more of that.  But, this weekend I had a moment where I just so clearly realized that, this is it. This is what it’s all about. This exhausting time when our babies are little, this is it and someday, very soon, I will miss this.  I will miss these sunny days in the backyard when our boys want to play with no one else but us.  I will miss these days when Maxwell can barely throw a football and definitely can’t catch one.  I will miss these days when Spencer is bobbling unsteadily around our sloping backyard, desperately trying to keep up with big brother and belly laughing all the way.  I will miss these days so I need to appreciate them.

I know there will be exciting days and big events in my boys’ lives, but I hope these mundane days in the backyard stick in their minds too.

I know they will stick in mine.

Week Wrap-up

February 28, 2014

Whew, this week has been a doozy!  Let’s go through the members of the family.

Spencer – sweet baby. He’s still not talking actual words but he is babbling up a storm.

spencey

He may not talk, but he moves faster than you can imagine. And opens doors – including the front door which now has to remain locked at all times!  Keeping up with him is an adventure.

spencey

We had his post tubes follow-up appointment yesterday and got a good report.  He’s had drainage coming out of his ears for a week – yes, as in goo coming out of his ears.  Seeing all the drainage only validated our decision to get tubes.  He hasn’t even been really snotty and it’s been coming out of his ears every day – which meant all of that used to just sit in his ears! Poor guy.  We got some ear drops to try and clear it all up.  By the way, trying to entertain my wiggly 16 month old in an ENT office is a workout – no! don’t touch that! close that cabinet! don’t push that button!

He’s busy but I sure do love him!

Maxwell – my sweet, sweet big boy.  He had a rough week testing some boundaries at home.  See this innocent little face?

maxwell

Well, it can be mischievous.

maxwell

He can get sassy and not “act nicely” like he’s supposed to.  We had two incidents this week that I’m still processing. He’s just growing up and seeing how far he can push things – and we clearly need to have a strong action and consequence program set.  I know it’s all part of growing up and he’s not doing anything other 3.5 year olds don’t do. We’ll get through it!

maxwell

Look at that face. love.

Robert – he’s been out of town at a conference in Biloxi since Wednesday. He’s been living it up at the blackjack table in a smoke filled casino!  ha!  Needless to say, I think he’s ready for a weekend at home.

Me – after feeling pretty sick all week, I think the antibiotic is finally helping and I’m hoping to get back to 100% by the weekend.  Fingers crossed! After dealing with these two lively boys without Robert for most of the week, I am definitely ready to get one of these at the Mexaurant tonight!

Hope you all had a great week and have fun plans for the weekend!

Four alarm Fire!

February 25, 2014

Maxwell officially has a new second in command…

firetruck

This past weekend, Spencer got in on the firefighting fun for the first time and he was pushing that fire truck around just as fast as his little legs would let him!

He also LOVED wearing the hat… (blurry pic but look how happy!)

Love seeing these two play happily together…

The firetruck fun continues!

See ya tomorrow – we’re off to an emergency!

Weekend 10

February 24, 2014

Ten things about our weekend…

1. We had a very special visitor!  GJ surprised Spencer and Maxwell on Saturday morning and we loved having her here all weekend!

gj visit

2. Robert was out of town basically from Thursday morning to Sunday morning.  I’ve been sick since Thursday morning so I was even more glad than the boys to have GJ in town!

3. Yes, I’m sick again. Honestly thought I had the flu again but went to the doc and was super surprised when the flu test came back negative. I had fever Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and that’s thankfully over now but I still don’t feel great.  My self-diagnosis?  Mono.  We’ll see how the week goes.

4. Despite my puny state, we still enjoyed the BEAUTIFUL weather this weekend with lots of playing outside.

(don’t you love our new construction zone!)

5. We spent lots of time strolling around our little Mayberry and definitely put in a stop at the tot lot.

6. GJ is a good sport!  She was following Spencer around the playground while I pushed Maxwell on the swings.  Spencer got up there and crawled through the tube and there’s no other way to get to the other side (that has a huge open drop off!) without crawling through that tube…so through it she went!  I got over there just in time to capture how awesome a grandmother she really is!  🙂

7. My kids may be picky eaters but neither of them will turn down a chocolate chip cookie!

8. Spencer showed GJ this weekend that his favorite place to play is the closet. He kept going in the closet and closing the door behind him all weekend, even at night when it was pitch dark in there! He’s definitely in an open/close doors phase!

9. When Maxwell says he wants ice cream, what he really wants are the brownie and cookie toppings you can put on your ice cream!  No worry though, Spencer will eat the ice cream!

10. We love GJ and wish she could visit every weekend!

See you tomorrow!
