Italy – more Lake Como

August 13, 2025

Thursday was maybe my favorite day of the trip! We started with breakfast by the lake…

IMG_2115
IMG_2117

and then took a full day boat tour of Lake Como! Our tour guide was so nice and informative. He showed us all the sights of the lake – including Clooney’s house! – and it could not have been better.

We stopped and walked around the Villa Del Balbianello which is where they filmed some of the Star Wars films as well as some James Bond scenes! It was beyond beautiful!

It was a little windy up there though!

IMG_0891
IMG_0895

Loved these trees at one of the houses on the island – some accessible only by boat!

IMG_0898

We stopped for a fantastic lunch and took this photo featuring Robert’s hat. ha!

IMG_0901

This is the life!

IMG_0919
IMG_0929

We also stopped and walked around Bellagio which was neat and very steep!

IMG_0935
IMG_0939

It was a very full and long day on the boat!

We returned around 4:00 and the kids couldn’t wait to swim and jump in the lake!

Robert was game for it too!

IMG_0993

That night we had dinner “in town”. GJ and Samantha dressed to match the hotel!

IMG_1022

Dinner was good and all I got from it were pics like this from the kids…

IMG_1026
IMG_1036

It was nice to walk to and from the restaurant and then walk around the hotel a bit that night.

I think we could all get used to that Villa D’Este life!

Italy – Lake Como

August 12, 2025

On Wednesday we got up and said goodbye to Florence…

IMG_0641
IMG_0629

Just adding this because I want to remember how pretty it was!

IMG_0628
IMG_0632

We had a driver take us to our next destination! We did make a pit stop at Ristorante La Rochetta for a wonderful – and very HOT – lunch!

IMG_0644
IMG_0646

Please enjoy this panoramic photo Maxwell took. ha!

IMG_0653
IMG_0659
IMG_0661
IMG_0662
IMG_0665

We then hopped back in the van and I thought I was going to die it was so hot but the payoff was worth it when we finally arrived at Villa d’Este in Lake Como!! This stop was really the impetus of the entire trip. GJ and I had been to Villa d’Este many years ago and always wanted to return. I am happy to report that it lived up to my memories and then some! Our room was so nice and big!

We explored the grounds…

and took 1k photos…well, I made GJ take 1k photos of us to try and get some that made me happy. I can be difficult to please with photos…grateful for family members that put up with me.

The entire hotel is just a dream!

IMG_0721
IMG_0727

We dressed for dinner that night at Terzo Crotto at the resort…

IMG_0761

and took even more photos!

IMG_0785
IMG_0774

Dinner was fantastic with perfect views of the lake…and the biggest mosquitos you’ve ever seen.

IMG_0788
IMG_0791
IMG_0794

That night there was even a fireworks show that we could see from our room!

IMG_0796

Perfecto indeed!

Lots more Como to come!

Italy – More Florence

August 11, 2025

On Tuesday we were ready for some adventure!

IMG_0510
IMG_0511

We were all a little unsure of the adventure planned but we gave it a go!

IMG_0512
IMG_0513
IMG_0515

Yep! We hopped on bicycles and biked our way through the very busy and small streets of Florence! Our guide, Philippo, showed us the sites along the way…

IMG_0520

and then we made our way outside of town which was very cool to see!

IMG_0522

We biked our way up to Piazza Michelangelo which was not an easy ride – not necessarily difficult but uphill and challenging. I was very proud of our crew!!

IMG_0526
IMG_0535

The ride down was much easier!

IMG_0546
IMG_0552
IMG_0561
IMG_0566
IMG_0572

The tour included lunch so we had a full, heavy sit down lunch complete with a bottle of wine that no one wanted! It was still nice…and Robert got in some good conversation with Philippo! ha! Robert is the best.

IMG_0577

That afternoon we had tickets to go into the Accademia Gallery to see the David! Very impressive!

IMG_0589
IMG_0592

The museum had plenty of interesting statues to see!

IMG_0598
IMG_0604

Arter that we walked through the Duomo museum which provided a nice air-conditioned space to walk around for an hour! and some interesting art too!

IMG_0607
IMG_0609
IMG_0612
IMG_1387

That night we cancelled out on our fancy dinner and got some pizza instead! Good decision!

IMG_0623

Of course we had gelato after!!

IMG_0627

A fun day full of Florence adventure!

Would love to hear from you! 4 Comments

Italy – Florence

August 8, 2025

On Monday afternoon we walked all over Florence…

IMG_0386

including finding my school from sophomore year of college and the street where I lived! I couldn’t remember our exact address so not sure which door was ours but we were close!

IMG_0392
IMG_0400
IMG_0405

Razorbacks in Firenze!

IMG_0410
IMG_0416

Some important purchases were made…

IMG_0409

including a special one on the Ponte Vecchio!

IMG_0418
IMG_0423
IMG_0424
IMG_0426

That evening we climbed the 465 winding steps to the top of the Duomo Bell Tower! The climb wasn’t that bad and the views were pretty impressive!

Dinner that night was what Robert was most excited about – Trattoria Dall’Oste! Turns out there is more than one in Florence and I’m not entirely sure we actually ate at the one we had a reservation at but, it was an incredible meal! It was a little confusing to order but we ended up with some of the best food of the trip!

IMG_0476
IMG_0488

Samantha’s pasta being made in a giant cheese wheel…

IMG_0481
IMG_0483

Spencer’s wagu!

IMG_0485

and Maxwell and Robert’s Florentine steak!

IMG_0486

I had a steak with green peppercorn sauce that was to die for. Everything was top notch!!

IMG_0487

After that we walked off our dinner a bit…

IMG_0494

and then of course got some gelato!

IMG_0500

A great day start to finish!

Italy – Florence

August 7, 2025

After a full day exploring Murano and Burano, we headed to the Venice train station and hopped on over to Firenze!

IMG_0237
IMG_0238
IMG_0239
IMG_0246

We got checked into our hotel – Hotel Brunelleschi. It was good – not quite as luxurious as our hotel in Venice – but the room setup was great with all three rooms behind one connecting door. The decor was a little more modern and our view was of a wall, but it was still a really nice hotel right in the middle of Florence. We had dinner that night at Paoli and it was SO good. We definitely had better food in Florence than we did in Venice!

IMG_0248
IMG_0249

The stairway to the bathroom was definitely not ADA compliant! ha!

IMG_0252

After dinner we got gelato near our hotel – and I think this was our favorite gelato of the trip. We went back each night we were in Florence!

IMG_0253
IMG_0255
IMG_0258

They shaped the gelato like a flower, put a macaron on top, and they had mint chocolate chip – what’s not to love?!

IMG_0259

We walked around Florence a bit and enjoyed the sights at night. I kept trying to get my bearings and find something familiar from my semester there in college but…nope. I barely remembered anything to be honest. It was about 25 years ago!

IMG_0261
IMG_0262
IMG_0265

The next morning we met with our tour guide to go on a “Florence Artisan Tour”. We saw someone making the marbled Florentine paper, pressing and melding gold pieces, and incredible mosaics. I am not sure if the kids enjoyed it quite as much as me and my mom but it was one of my favorite days of the trip! Our tour guide also gave us plenty of historical facts about the sights we passed along the way.

IMG_0271
IMG_0273

First stop – paper marbling! Watching him make the pattern was mesmerizing! I could have bought everything in the store!

IMG_0300

IMG_0305

Ferragamo!

IMG_0307

The Ponte Vecchio!

IMG_0311

Next stop – the goldsmith. He showed us how he imprinted patterns onto gold and even imprinted a Lire for the kids. He also melded some pieces together. We definitely walked away with some gold souvenirs!

IMG_0324
IMG_0330
IMG_0334
IMG_0343

After that we went to the mosaic shop. We saw all of the stones they have and then watched two craftsmen carefully piecing together intricate and very detailed mosaic pieces. It was pretty incredible!

IMG_0361
IMG_0368
IMG_0371
IMG_0373

We then said goodbye to our guide and finally got one of the Florentine sandwiches Robert had been hearing so much about on his social media! ha! It was good!

IMG_0377

More Firenze to come tomorrow!

Would love to hear from you! 3 Comments
