Maxwell is thriving in Kindergarten. He has a great class, loves his teacher, and truly enjoys school every day! A few things that have gone on at school lately…
They celebrated 100 days of school!
Another day parents got to go up and observe their morning meetings. I always love getting to see him in his element surrounded by his buddies!
I also got to go up for the Jump Rope for the Heart performance which, I have to say, was way more entertaining than I was expecting!
The school system also did an art contest about 6 weeks ago. It is system wide and then the winners of each school go on to compete at the District/Regional level. Kids from each grade could enter in various categories – visual arts, singing, video, etc. Maxwell was excited about it and worked on his Millennium Falcon adding some X Wing Fighters and Tie Fighters to make a complete scene. He did every single bit of this himself. I did not help with any of it. He put it on black posterboard to make it look even more awesome and I thought it turned out, well, incredible!
Seriously, the amount of detail in that thing and the fact that he’s only 6?! Wow.
He continually amazes me. Anyway, he was very excited about the contest and we were all pretty confident he would win something. Unfortunately, the winners were announced and Maxwell didn’t get anything, not even an honorable mention. I thing I was more bummed about it than Maxwell honestly, mainly because it just didn’t make sense to me. These were the winning pieces…
When I went to pick up Maxwell’s piece that afternoon, I saw the PTO mom who was heading up the contest and when she saw I was getting Maxwell’s art, she stopped me and said that she wanted me to know that the judge was blown away by the level of detail in Maxwell’s piece and really loved it. Unfortunately, it was 2 inches too big. !!!! Yes, total mom fail because I did not read the guidelines carefully enough and the piece of poster board was 2 inches too big. I was crushed. Crushed. I don’t remember feeling that sad or disappointed in myself in a long, long time. Maxwell took it all in stride (life lesson – be more like my 6 year old!). Still, I was just so bummed that I took away Maxwell’s right to get honored and recognized for his hard work and talent. Oh well, there’s always next year. I did decide that piece needed to be recognized though and took it to the framer. We got it back last week and Maxwell thinks it’s pretty cool…
and it now it looks really cool hanging in his room!
On another good note, a piece that Maxwell made in art class was selected to be displayed in the local library for the month of March! They picked one piece form each grade and Maxwell’s art will represent all of Kindergarten! Hooray! We even get to to go a reception later this month…
I’m so proud of this kid. He’s smart, he’s kind, he’s creative, he’s responsible, he’s funny…he’s the best. The BEST.
I love him so much.
