Well, it was an interesting weekend around here. On Wednesday of last week I started not feeling so hot. I honestly thought all of the tomatoes I had been eating (remember that caprese salad!) were giving me indigestion. I loaded myself up with all kinds of medicine and really thought I was on the road to recovery. Friday mid-day we hopped in the car to go to the lake with Robert’s family 3 hours outside of Birmingham. By the time we got up there I was feeling pretty bad and it just continued to worsen as the night went on. Around 9pm the pain definitely felt like it was localizing on my lower right side and I was really scared that I was 3 hours from home with an appendicitis. Yikes! Robert wasn’t convinced that was the issue and we decided to try and get some sleep and re-evaluate it in the morning. Well, sleep did not come for me! At 1:30am I woke Robert up and told him that we needed to pack up and get me to the hospital. We loaded the car, transferred a sleeping Maxwell to his car seat and set out on the longest 3 hour drive of my life! We almost stopped at Huntsville but decided to push on to Birmingham and I’m so glad we did because now we’re able to have Susan come help with Maxwell. Thank goodness for Susan! I might be nominating her for sainthood soon! π
Robert dropped me off at the ER around 5am and they immediately did a Cat scan to verify that it was an appendicitis…although it was pretty obvious. The scan showed that not only did I have an appendicitis, but it was ruptured. Not good at all. A rupture greatly increases your chance of infection and can actually be fatal. Scary!! After a long time waiting, I was finally taken into surgery at 12:30. My surgeon was fantastic and able to do the surgery laproscopically so I won’t have a giant scar. Hooray! However, since it was ruptured, I have to stay in the hospital 4 to 5 days so they can pump me full of antibiotics. All I want to do is get home and see my buddy. Luckily Dad brought him up to see me yesterday morning…
Best medicine there is! Another side effect of this surgery? Maxwell has been unexpectedly weaned. He’s had cow’s milk the past two days and so far, so good. We’ll see.
I’m doing ok. Just very, very sore and ready to go home. The kicker of it all? My mom asked me on Thursday if I thought the pain was from my appendix. I assured her it wasn’t. Guess you really should always listen to your mom!
Here’s another cute picture that Robert sent me in the hospital so I don’t miss Maxwell too bad…
While the picture is great I can’t wait to get home!
